Maximise Your Planting Season: The Ultimate Pre-Season Equipment & Precision Tech Checklist

Equipment Readiness for Optimal Planting or Seeding

As planting season approaches, it’s essential to prepare your farm equipment and precision technology to ensure optimal performance.

Don’t wait until the week of planting to address potential issues—proactively managing your equipment will help you avoid unnecessary downtime and ensure efficiency throughout the season.

Here’s a detailed checklist from Jeremy Dickins, National Technical Service Manager, to help you get your equipment and technology ready for the planting or seeding season.

1. Move Your Displays and Receivers Over

If your displays and receivers were used in combines, or other equipment during harvest season, now is the time to move them to your planter tractor or other relevant planting equipment. Proper installation ensures your guidance and correction systems will be fully operational from day one. Be sure to perform a communication check by starting up and running all displays and control systems to ensure all devices are online and communicating effectively.

2. Ensure Corrections are Active and ready to Go

Check that your GNSS or GPS receiver correction subscriptions are not about to expire and ensure that your signal is active. Here is a video to help you connect to your RTX description from a GFX display.

3. Do a Visual Inspection

Inspect components like receivers and modules for any damage. It’s important to identify any issues early to prevent disruptions.

4. Organise Your Display and Software Account

A little effort now will save you a great deal of time later. First make sure all your yield data from the previous season are downloaded before you begin.  Ensure all field and planting equipment information is updated in your display and software account. Inputting tractor, field, and farm data ahead of time guarantees accuracy in the field and helps to avoid last-minute troubleshooting.

Take the time now to:

  • Verify that your field boundaries and planting maps are correctly loaded into your system.
  • Update planting equipment profiles, so your display recognises every implement in use.

5. Update Precision-IQ Firmware

Firmware updates are regularly released to enhance functionality and resolve potential issues. The latest Precision-IQ™ firmware, 14.6 includes new features and fixes to improve your system’s performance during planting.

  • Download and verify that all displays are running the latest firmware version.
  • Reach out to us for help performing these updates if needed.

6. Test the TeamViewer Support Process

Unexpected challenges in the field can quickly cause downtime during planting. That’s why every Precision-IQ™ equipped display has TeamViewer QuickSupport. TeamViewer allows us to remotely access your display and associated data. That way, we can troubleshoot from anywhere and get you back up and running as quickly as possible.

Before planting or seeding begins:

  • Test the TeamViewer connection to ensure everything is configured correctly.
  • Run through the TeamViewer support process with your crew.

7. Steering Performance and Calibration Check – The Most Critical Step

Engage the guidance path and perform a stationary inspection to ensure path-to-path offsets are zero, ensuring proper spacing. As Jeremy jokingly puts it, “Because no one likes air strips that everyone can see driving past your farm.”

8. Schedule a Pre-planting Tech Check-up

We’re here to support you every step of the way. Our team can perform a pre-planting tech inspection to ensure your system is optimally configured for the planting season.

During the inspection, we’ll:

  • Confirm that your tech is properly installed and calibrated.
  • Troubleshoot potential issues before they cause downtime.
  • Provide recommendations for upgrades or enhancements to improve operations.
